includes:
  • process
    • In class, the students are introduced to a new topic with a "grabber" and an exploration.
    • That evening, the students watch a 5-7 minute video that teaches the topic.
    • To encourage/insure that the students have watched the video:

    • In class the next day students are given an assignment or activity that gives them the opportunity to practice the concepts being taught.
      • While the students are working I go from student to student checking their understanding.
      • I do on-the-spot tutoring with those who need it.
      • I can differentiate more quickly because I know which students have it and which ones still need more time.

    • For the last 15 minutes of class I start the process over again by introducing the new topic.

  • technology using
    • Moodle- this is where the videos and other assignments are listed. Links take the students to the assignments: videos, quizzes, interactive activities on other web sites
    • Aver A+ software for its whiteboard and mark-up capabilities
    • Document camera

  • plus/delta for what you are doing
    • Plus
      • More time for discovery/exploration
      • Students aren't sitting at home practicing the same mistakes over and over again.
      • The teaching that normally takes 20-30 minutes in the classroom only takes five to seven minutes on the video.
      • Students can watch the video as many times as they need to.
      • If a student finishes an assignment early during class time, he can use his phone to watch the next video.

    • Delta
      • Need to find other ways to make the videos. The sound and the picture don't always match.
      • A few students are not computer literate enough to access the videos.

  • what will you do differently
    • Next year I will start by communicating with the parents explaining the "Flip" concept and giving them web site and log in information.
    • I would like to gradually develop more sophisticated videos and use interactive web sites.

  • difference it has made in your classroom
    • More time for discovery activities.
    • More opportunity to develop relationships.
    • Better understanding of each student's progress and degree of understanding.
    • Students work together and help/teach each other a lot.
    • I don't have to unteach the students mistakes.
